What is E-Gold? Please explain in simple English.

My country do not support Paypal. I have never banked my mylot earnings and the only option I see to get it banked is with E-Gold. Can someone in simple English explain how this work. Is it safe? I think I've heard a rumour about E-Gold being on hold or something? Please share your experience up to date with E-Gold

well i've heard that they have had some trouble but the toubled time is over. I've never experienced any trouble with e-gold and i'm still using it.
