How much can one earn by "ads by google" on their page??

i went to the page and it says it all depends on the internal calculations. Can anyone guide me how does it work? If google pays for flashing the ads or do i get paid if someone from my site clicks on the ad by google. how much do i get for each referal to google? i will be thankful to know this and i am open to know more, please guide ...
