Did you miss out on any big events in high school?

I did not go to my prom or my graduation. Sometimes I wish I had gone but if given the chance again. I'm not sure I would go! I think it was just a waste of time and money but that could just be because I'm older now and am a little more conscience of those things. Did you miss out on any special event in school? Do you wish you had attended?

No, but I tried...boy did I try. I've always thought that proms were a waste (when I was younger). My junior year, I had plans to go to school on the day that everyone took off for prom preps...I had the day planned out, I was going to work on those new fangled computers! By second period, I got a call from the principle to call home. When I did, my Dad asked if I'd call his friend from his childhood because he had a question for me. Well, his daughter (a year older then me) was going to go to the prom but her date went in for emergency surgery and I was the only one of the tolerable geeks left (hopefully she said that jokingly). Anyway, I went since she wanted to go. Surprised all my friends who were trying to get me to go for a year. Well, the next year--senior year, I was being pressured again from all angles. Friends, and even some other Moms. Of course my Mom was trying too, but I wasn't interested in going because I wasn't even dating someone. There was one I would have gladly went with, but she was dating someone much older and I didn't want to get involved. One day, after wrestling practice, my Mom relayed that some girl had called and sounded very excited. She didn't get a name or a number (too excited I guess) and we played telephone tag for five days. Mom literally had me wait at home during the time she normally called. To make a long story short, I was asked if I wanted to go...She was a good friend and we shared many many interests...but I never thought about asking her for a date, and the prom...well, that was an oddity. We went and dated for almost three years before we went separate ways. As for graduation, that was one thing I wanted to avoid in protest. Our school was one of the first in the country to strike for more money, and they were already overpaid as compared to the rest of the citizenry (1984 the librarian was making $65K!). Besides, there were other serious issues with the faculty that bothered me...My plan was to get my recruiter to send me to basic with a letter of intent...Mom would have none of that, and forced the issue with the school. Without the letter, I had to wait until the day after graduation. Do I miss school...no. Some of my friends I missed, but everything was artificial, fake, and pompous. I'm glad I attended though, but if I hadn't, it wouldn't have made a difference in my life. I did miss my college graduation...for that I'm disappointed.

Thanks for sharing! I'm glad you mentioned regreted not attending your college graduation. I'm 8 weeks away from finishing and I wasn't sure if I wanted to make the trip (to another state since I go to school online) to get my diploma. I do think it would mean more to my family than it would me, but i guess it would be worth it.

LOL, no offense taken! Sometimes I think the ceremonies do mean more to the family then to the recipient. Thats a good point to bring up!

We dont really have a prom in schools in the uk but our leavers party i kinda wish i did miss it as we all got dressed up for no reason it started at around 7pm i think we had a nice meal served to us by all our teachers then there was a disco but it all ended at 9pm as some kids were drinking and were found blinding drunk out in the fields so the police were called and we were all sent home.

there was one event that I missed and it was pretty much all my fault..at our school, when you become a junior, you can go to this one big dance/party that we called "the player's ball"..I got suspended a few days before it for the dumbest thing...this guy was in the computer lab next to me and I heard him telling his friends about one of my best friends..he called her all types of nasty things and gave them a rundown of their date...I got so mad, that I got up and punched him in the face..I got suspended for 10 days and had to give up my ticket for the ball..now that I think about it, I could've handled it better...I didnt have to hit him..but it was something like a momentary loss of control..

No I didn't. I didn't want to regret anything so I went. I knew that if I went I would have fun, and I definitely ended up having fun, but that if I skipped it I would never know and never be able to talk about my high school experiences.

i was a very active student while in high school. name any extra curricular activity and i am there...be it sports, academic contests, spiritual reach outs, campaigns against poverty, helping those in emergency situations, whatever. neither did i miss out on activities which are school-related like foundation ceremonies, junior-senior prom, graduation...
