DSL disconnect

I have DSL service from Frontiernet. The system has not failed when I'm on the web or using e-mail, but when it sits idle for an unknown length of time it disconnects. It can be reconnected sometimes by powering down the speedstream modem for ten plus seconds and firing it up again. That doesn't always work, then it becomes necessary to restart the the computer itself. The ethernet card is: Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC
