I traveled part of this road in 64 before they put in the Intersytae and since then I have stayed in motels on this route in Tucumcari NM. I would like more of the old motels to come back for the big ones arre mostly now like motels so you cant park in front of your door and set outside by your room and watch the people a traffic any more. When traveling I always go into the town and look for a real motel not and Inn that cost an arm and a leg to stay. They are just not for me. Any way you stop at a motel to sleep take a bath and such not to get on net watch tv. so you dont need all that only if you plan to live there would you need all this. Here is a link to what has happened and what is happening on Route 66 http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/apn_forgotten_motels enjoy!

Lakota, I am glad that you have mentioned it...I think that Route 66 is part of American history...and should be taking care of... My house is close from Route 66 and I love to take this route everyday....

There are few motels here, but city is big, plenty of car repair shops and restaurants...name here is Ogden/historic route 66, it runs from Downtown Chicago and probably ends in LA, but I use the part running to western suburbs...

This is just too sad. I always thought if I ever visited the USA I would like to do this trip. I think it would be great to be able to buy one of these places and fix it up. I wonder where people stay, or stop for food or fuel if all these places have become a part of a bygone era.

Oh the I 40 camr in and they have all this on there exits. Parts of Route 66 is still here but not all I have been on most of it from Oklahoma thru Arizona. They have a road sign telling you are on the Real Route 66 It takes you thru most towns thru these states and you can still find the small motels but not in real good shape. The Government gave alot to people from India to run and they just didnt fix them back up the way they were. Thats sad As I said I have stay in a few of the old motels on these Routes. One that was fixed up was in Santa Rosa New MExico the fellers that fixed it up did a real nice job and it is paited PINK! Catches the eye lol
