Kidney Failure Treatment Options: Saline Injections?

I'm wondering if any of you have had an experience with a cat that's got an ailing kidney. Mom's vet suggested saline injections once a day for two weeks, due to the fact that the cat (who is 17 years old) was so dehydrated. She's drinking lots of water, but it's all going into the cat box, apparently. The cat really perked up after the first injection two days ago, and then wilted again. She's very weak. She's being brought in for her second injection today, and I recommended that my mother just get the rest of the two week's worth of injections and do them herself rather than running the cat back and forth to the vet's everyday. The vet will show her how to do it. I think the cat will be happier getting the injections at home and from her most trusted human. Some cats supposedly do very well on this treatment, and do not require further treatments for years. I wonder if this has to do with the cat food poisoning recall???? Have any of you heard of this treatment and had it done? If so, what was the outcome?

It really depends on the extent of the kidney ailment. I had a cat years ago with renal failure, and we gave him the fluid treatment at home - about 3x per week. At the start of the treatment, he seemed to bounce back after each injection. Over time, the disease took over and we had to put him to sleep. But we kept him around as long it seemed that he was fairly comfortable and happy. There are other cases, though, where the cat lives for many years.
