I was just diagnosed two weeks ago after years of problems. I was put on depakote ER. I am breastfeeding and it is the only thing safe to take while breastfeeding. Has anyone had success with depakote? How long does it take to feel better and get my moods stable? Is there anything else I can do to help? I was told it was hypomania but from what I understand it is the same as bipolar.

My father was diagnosed bipolar a little more than 30 years ago. He has been taking depacote for over 10 years now, but along with other bipolar meds. The one constant for him is lithium. It's hard for me to say which one med does best for him. In his case, since he's been dealing with it for so long, the sad fact is that just one med doesn't do it. I wish you the very best. It's a tough diagnosis to deal with because it's not like you can just obliterate all of your moods. We all have mood swings, but simply having them doesn't make you bipolar. And it's not realistic (or preferable) to eliminate your mood changes. Otherwise life would be so very boring. I can only imagine your challenges. Best of luck to you.
