Do you prefer using handkerchiefs or tissues when blowing your nose?

My poor dad who has tons of health issues already, has a bad runny nose. He still uses handkerchiefs even though I have told him that he is just putting the germs right back on his nose plus the fact that even though they are washed,I don't think all the germs come out. I am really surprised that he still wants to use them.Everyone else seems to use tissues. What about you? Do you use tissues or hankies?

I use tissues when I have colds or when my allergic rhinitis attacks. But everytime my dad sees me blowing my nose using a tissue he'll tell me to stop using them and use hankies instead. The weird part is he wants me to use the hanky like a tissue. When I'm done with the hanky, I'll get another one. Like when we use tissues, after one use we throw it. But I just do that if my dad's around. If I'm at school or out, I use tissues.

Allergic rhinitis is when you are allergic to dust, smoke, pollution and fibers from cloths etc and you end up sneezing until your eyes is already teary. Anyway, my dad's getting better now and hopefully he'll be as healthy as ever. :)

When I was still kids, my mom always give handkerchief for me to carry everywhere. She even personally embroidered our name innitials on it. But as I grew up, I prefer tissues. Its just more practical and more hygiene and more environtment friendly. But I do know some people still using handkerchief. My father in law for example. We can just explain to him why better not using handkerchiefs till our throat sore, he just definitily won't use tissue to blow his nose....so we just have to make sure he has lotsa new handkerchiefs spare in his drawer....

I prefer using tissues to a hankerchief especially if I am having a runny nose. It so yucky having to wash the mucus filled hanky and I think it is more hygienic to throw away the tissues after they are used.

My husband still uses handkerchiefs and will not stop. He had a drawer of them and used 2 a day. LOL I on the otherhand use tissues. They are soft and you can throw them away without getting..well you know what all over your clothes or purse..whereever you carry it. LOL

I too feel that it's more hygienic to use tissue paper than to reuse a handkerchief. So that's what I prefer to do. Tissues can be used just once and then thrown away. Then I can just take a brand new piece when I need to. I definitely prefer tissue paper for hygiene reasons.

I always use tissues... but I think that is a response to the way is a disposable place these days. Almost everything is a throw away item. I think handkerchiefs are a little gentler on your nose, but I can't get past the convenience of a tissue!

tissues are so much more hygenic than the hankies, though they are nicer to look at ,lol.I dont think I could use a hanky unless it was absolutely necessary.

I understand how some older people want to use hankies, that was what they grew up with, but I think they are gross. Unless you are only using it once, it's gross. However, if you bleach them when you wash them you will get all the germs out. I like to use tissues. I blow my nose, toss the tissue. No gross factor other than having to blow my nose in the first place.

It's always the tissues for me. I keep thinking hankies will be dirty when you keep blowing into them. Tissue is more user-friendly - literally.

Before, I prefer to use handkerchief than tissues when I have a runny nose. It was because of financial matters. I just wanted to be more practical. I don't have extra money to buy. But when I have my relationship with my boyfriend, I decided not to bring handkerchiefs. He always miss it somewhere whenever he borrow it from me.

I would really prefer tissues when blowing my nose because I know it would be quite untidy when I do it with my handkerchief and the fact that I know I will still be using it the whole day round..

I prefer kleenex (well, actually Puffs).....LOL For me, the fact that I can throw them away after one use...the convenience is just too compelling.... I was raised watching my Gradpa use a hankie...he always carried one in his back pocket...sticking out about 1/4 of the way...I used to think it was funny.....Sure wish I could see him standing here with a handkerchief sticking out of his pocket now......brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it... Isn't it strange the things that will trigger a memory so vividly???

yea,it seems like just the simplest things with bring forth a memory, some good, some bad. My dad still keeps a hanky hanging out of his pocket. I have tried to get him to use tissues but it's like trying to get a tiger to change his stripes

Sometimes, I used handkerchiefs (because I always have a handkie with me everytime I go out) if there's no tissue around. It's really frustrating that you just make a blow in the public without covering your nose.

I don't like using handkerchief because of the same reasons as you have given. Besides that it is very inconvenient to wash the handkerchief every time after you have used it. And I agree the germs on the handkerchief would not go away unless you have immersed it in Dettol or whatsoever. On the other hand, I like using tissues because every wipe is very clean and afterwards we just dispose it and never have to deal with the cleaning issue. I think your father is trying to save money, but I am not sure if this is the case. How about you buying him the tissue so that he would not have to purchase it on his own? If this effort can make him switch to using tissue, maybe the effort is worthwhile.

I use only tissues for blowing my nose. In the past I used handkerchiefs but I stopped because of the spread of germs.

If I have a cold and run out of tissues I will resort to a handkerchief. But I hate them, not only are you right about the viruses, but they are just tough on a sore nose to begin with. They come in handy for other things, such as my husband will carry one in the summer if he is working hard to wipe sweat from his face. But there is nothing like a ultra soft Kleenex for a cold, and running after snotty nosed babies.

hello there. guess what, we're the same. my dad is also suffering from runny nose almost every day because he has a lot of allergies. my poor dad. anyway, his condition is improing now though, thanks to what he's taking, its called fern-c, maybve your dad can get well from this too. anyway, to get back on the topic, my dad uses tissues to blow his nose on because my mom would scold him if ever he uses hankies to blow his nose with because like what you said, the germs would just keep coming back with the hankies.

upto 3 years before i used hankies and now many are also using in india .as i am indian,it is convinient for me in india .we reuse them after washing . now i use tissues for cleaning mouth and hands, for rinning nose ,and cleaning anything in kitchen. so i prefer more , now. as now i am in kuwait, here tissues are more used and are easily available everywhere, when we go outside also. in outside toilets also, tisssues are easily available.it is somewhat cost, but there are used for more uses ,so i use them more in my day to day life. my husband will not use more,he uses handkercheifs and napkins more.
