People Watching

Do you like to watch people a lot? Do you watch your neighbors? Are you guilty of people watching when you see their windows open and you can see them, do you watch what they do? When I was a kid, I remember living in a multi-unit condo complex--we were living on the top floor. We could see our neighbors, most windows do not have curtains so we watched our neighbors and make stories of what they could possibly be doing ... like watching their lives on TV. We even gave them nicknames...lol...when they look our way we would wave, and they waved too! Some would close their windows some just ignored us. I think becuase we were kids so they did not mind. I don't know how many of you have seen the Alfred Hitchcock movie, whereby James Stewart's character who lives in an apartment complex views everything that is going on from his rear view window. Is looking at neighbors being nosy or just plain human nature---curiosity? Nowadays, I still find myself looking at neighbors walking by in front of our home...followed them with my eyes until they disappear from my sight. I do not watch them inside their homes as I used to when I was a kid...Besides it is embarassing to do so.

I like watching people who are just moving along the streets but never from their windows. Every day I get to see a new face with lot to tell the world. By just looking at their faces I cook up a story into my mind about what might be going on in their mind and have fun. But it is just for me and never tell anyone about it.

That is great. I too love to imagine what people may be thinking, etc. I like to make up stories etc...who knows someday we can write them and get them published as novels. Only people with great imagination and do so ..right?

My wife and I like going to places like parks and malls and sitting down just watching the people, and the world in general, go by. It's fun, and you can always try to pretend to guess what they do, what they are doing, where they are going. I don't watch people in their homes, even if it's in view. I kinda get the feeling that I am invading in on their privacy; your home is supposed to be your sanctuary, even if it is in plain view. I might glimpse inside a home every now and again, but usually not watching. I'll also say something to the effect of "man, I wouldn't leave my window that open, especially in view of the street" or something to that effect.

it's fun to watch people in the parks and malls. You are right...when you peek like a peeping tom would, that is invasion, just a glance is not too bad.

I watch everybody. I am a writer and have to observe people, how they act. I do not look through people's windows and I watched "Rear Window" and had the murderer known, he would have been killed. My husband always keeps the curtains closed because he does not want people to watch us eating, but our windows are tinted, so I doubt anyone can look in. I had better stop this because I have this funny imagination about people's faces pressed against our living room window.

Yes, people watching does help in creative writing. Gives you something to write about.

I would say I love to watch nature more, but watching people as a natural observer of those inhabiting this planet earth and what might be part of their deeper psychological motivations to be observed.

That is wonderful. I love watching nature and also watching ants and little bugs...or any animal for that matter. I think I just like to observe things and people around me.
