Song writing

Does anyone know how to get your songs out to artists to perform? I love writing songs and even putting music to them, but I know it's better to start out writing and get your name recognized that way first before trying to jump in all at once. I don't want to just post lyrics everywhere since they'll get stolen. Any contests or websites that specialize in song writing? I do pop, soft rock, rock, and a little celtic/folk.
