Presents for the teachers...

This past week I have been thinking of what to give my childrens teachers for their end of the school year present. My son has been a challenge for his teacher and her helper. My son has behavioral issues. He hasn't always been able to control himself when he gets upset. He has had the most wonderful teachers this past year. She was willing to work with me on how I thought that we should handle the situation. Yesterday she asked me if it would be alright if she gave my son some legos to help him remember her and her helper by. I expressed to her that there wasn't any need to give him a present because there wasn't any way that he could forget her.Anyway he has the legos. I am thinking about having the children decorate flower pots and putting lilys inside. When they hand them to their teachers they can explain that they wanted to give them something that would remind the teachers of them. The teachers could plant the flowers in their yards and they would grow back every year. Do you think that this would be a stupid idea? Can you think of somethinf else that might be better for the children to do? Any helpful suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks.

Funny you should ask this question. I just posted a discussion about a present I got from one of the kids in my class with behavioral problems. It was a little off the wall but definitely a cute idea. His mom gave me binoculars. She told me it was because I could always see the good in her son when others couldn't. Even when we had our days where we actually had to send him home cause we couldn't keep him under control I would tell her something that her son did well for the day. Of course she got to know why her son went home but I also pointed out at least 2 positive things that her son had done for each negative thing he had done. I know its kind of an off the wall present but at least she would understand what you meant to her per say. Good luck finding a present for her.

I saw your discussion as well. I thought about doing something like that as well but I think giving her something that she can watch grow or atleast use on a daily basis might mean more.

That is a really off the wall idea but very good and quirky. I am so glad this discussion is here because I need ideas too!

I think that is a wonderful idea, provided you know that the teacher have a place to plant them. It would be heartbreaking to the teacher i would imagine to receive such a sweet gift if they were living in an apartment or something. Along with that, to include the other person's idea, you could have the children write or draw a thank you note to the teachers and put them all together in a binder with a photo of each child.

You could also choose to personalize a coffee/tea mug. My son made one for me for Mother's Day last year. I don't drink coffee, but I do hot chocolate. So a mug could be personalized, as well.

Actually, I do know that each teacher has her own house with a garden. We have talked about our gardens before. I always like to include a personal note to express what the teacher has meant to us and to say thank you for all of their hard work. Thanks for responding.

As a teacher, I can tell you that my most meaningful gifts are hand written thank yous from the students and parents. They are easy to store and they can be looked at when I am having a bad day. I absolutely love getting individual cards and let me tell you that they are few and far between these days. Just my opinion. How nice of you to think of the teachers.

We always do the hand written notes to say thank you. I like to place a photo of the child with their name written on it to help them remember. Thanks for the suggestion.

I am also struggling with what to get a teacher who is the best teacher any of my kids have ever had. It is only her first year teaching, and she is just in another league. I think your idea of the lillies is really brilliant and memorable. I am sure she will be touched by such a thoughtful gift!

Thank you so much. This is the first year that my son has had a teacher really take the time to try to work with him. I have tried using these same methods with other teachers and they have told me that it doesn't work. This teacher helped me prove the other teachers wrong. She will be in the classroom next to his next year so I know she will continue to be a big help. If you don't mind my asking how old are your children?

I do like your idea but I have another that you might like as well. Why not go ahead an decorate the flower pot but instead of using a real flower why don't you use some styrofoam painted brown for dirt. Then you can use these long pieces of wire with some kind of clip on the end so that it would be able to hold pictures. Then the teacher could plant her students each year.Or the gift card was a good idea.

My mom is a first grade teacher and I know she'd love it. Another good idea is a gift card to a teacher supply store. A lot of teachers have to buy classroom supplies out of their pockets.

Thats a wonderful idea. I usually give the teachers a huge supply box that have extra crayons and things in it at the start of the year. I bet a gift card would be useful. I heard that teachers spend atleast an extra $400 a year out of their own pocket. Its amazing.

I think it is cool. When my children were in public school (before homeschool) we use to do the same thing. The kids would make them a card and then we would go either to Wal-Mart or Staples and get them a gift card. The first time I did it, was because the teacher my daughter had is an awesome teacher.(Most likely the best in our district.) She wrote us a thank you note, but as she handed it to me later, she had tears in her eyes, telling me "That this was the first time a parent has given her something, that she can use to help her students." We talked for a while and I found out she is a single parent and that she spends 20 to 25% of her income on supplies that some of the parents can not afford for their children." After that started making sure that each year, that each of my children's teacher got at least a $25 gift card. I love the flower plant idea and I know that teachers seem to love it too. The last year my kids were in public school, they each did that. Took a small pot and painted it and we put Marigolds into them. They took them in the last day of school, each recieved a thank you card from their teachers durning the summer last year. Sounds like your son has a good teacher. I think it is great to show them apperication.

I read an article that said teachers spend atleast $400 a year of their own money. Thats when I decided I could send extra supplies to school. I try to buy extra of everything on my childrens school supply list. Teachers don't really make enough to be able to afford as much money as they spend on their classrooms. Thanks.

I think that's a lovely idea! I know i would be over the moon if i was a teacher and recieved a gift like that from a pupil. It's somthing that will last and can be treasured, really i think you should go with that. A box of chocolates each wouldn't go a miss either. :]

Thank you so much for the response. We actually give each teacher a tub of candy at the beginning of the school year. The teachers like to hand out candy to the students who do good work.

I think its a wonderful idea- When my daughter was younger she had the same teacher for 2 years- The first year we gave him gift certificates for Staples- Teachers often times buy their own supplies for the classrooms- the 2 nd year we gave him a rose bush- His wife was the teacher next door-- and worked with my daughter also- With a handwritten note- Teachers help the flowers and plants of our future grow- thank you for helping me grow- something like this- with the thought that they would plant the bush and think of my daughter- I ran into this teacher a couple of weekd ago at a ball game- He said Hi-- Our rose bush s beautiful -- see they remembered us! so yes perfect idea!

Awe that was such a beautiful story. My sons teachers aid lives in the same town as us. We actually walk by her house on a daily basis. He got to see the plant that he gave her in the front yard. Today he knocked on her door to say hi.

I think that is a lovely idea! I'm not sure about the choice of flower, though. Aren't they kind of hard to care for? I, for one, don't have a green thumb but even I can keep marigolds and pansies alive. Lilies are beautiful, but she might feel bad if they die. If the pot is psersonalized, though, that would be excellent. His little handprint and he can write his name and the year on it. I think that would be more special than anything else. I've picked up bath kits for my son's teachers (he has a teacher and two aides in his class) and such as I've not real creative, but this sounds like something even I can help my son with. Like you, my son has had a wonderful teacher this year, as well as his bus driver (my son is special needs and non-verbal) and I was trying to find something to do for them and this sounds like a great idea!! :)

The reason I was picking a lily was because she could transplant the flower outside. It could grow back every spring. Like you I don't have a green thumb so I asked my mom what would be something that was easy to maintain. She told me the lily. Thanks This is the first year I choice to make soemthing. Every other year we just buy the teachers preesents. I did buy presents for mmy younger sons teachers, teacher aides, and bus driver. I didn't want to try making crafts for all of the teachers.

Every year I am stuck trying to find someting to give my sons teacher as my son has problems as well and I love all the help that his teacher has offered him and all the times she has been there to help me as well in coming up with idea's that won't single my child out from the rest of the class as this has always been my biggest fear for him that he will be picked on because he has such a hard time and I have to say this is the best idea I have ever heard of and don't know why I have never thought of it before as I grow plants and have given plants to others as gifts . This is just so much more personal then anything you could pick up in a store and has so much more meaning behind it . I would definitely go with your idea .

I did go ahead with my idea. When I walked in to their classroom to hand the teachers their presents there were tears in their eyes. I hand the first plant to his main teacher and took a moment to explain that she could transplant the flower out to her garden in her yard and that it would grow back each year to remind her of Mitchell. She gave me a big hug and said that she learned a lot from her friend Mitchell and what a pleasure it was to work with a parent like me. Then I went over to the teachers aid to hand her her present Mitchell explained to her what she could do with the plant. She invited him over to her house to help her plant it. We have a date to go over this week.

Actually, your idea with the Lily's is extremely thoughtful and such a nice idea! I would definitely do this for the teacher and the helper. I think they would love them! Also, I do need to express that it is refreshing to see that you can state that your child was a bit unruley. So many times I see that the parent blames teacher or the school. Not to say that sometimes teachers aren't to blame but, not always.... Anyways, I don't think any other idea would be as nice as your idea. I think it is very sweet of you to do this!

Thank you for the compliment. Its not always easy as a parent to admit that your child isn't always perfect but its better for him and I to be able to admit to the issue. That way we all can work together to make it a good experience for him. Thanks for the response.

I think that is a wonderful ifea...the fact that Lilies come back each year would serve as a reminder for them and will undoubtedly bring many years of hapiness to these women who have been so good to your son this year... I think that they must be special teachers indeed...the legos was a touching thought....

I almost cried when they asked if they could give him the legos. Its been such a struggle for my son this year. She has really worked wonders with him. I want her to know how special she and her helper really are.
