Do you have latecomers in class?

One of the problems of the teachers are those students who are latecomers. Most of the possible reasons could be, they woke up late, or they respond to the call of nature. Some reasons could be valid yet some are not. But it depends on the teacher on how those reasons should be accepted. How do you handle such student who comes late in your class? Do you still let them in come your class?

I think you can still let them come provided that they will learn their lesson, you can give them a task as a punishment for example so they won't be late again

Yup, generally I do...weighing the odds against not accepting latecomers in class, I'd rather that they still attend but with a strong warning not to be late next time. I'm thinking that if I don't allow latecomers to attend my class, these students might wander around outside the campus, thus exposing them to danger. In addition to this, the policy of "better late than never" still applies to this situation. I agree that even if they are late, they can still catch up with the lesson in progress...the disadvantage of course is that latecomers cause disturbance to the class discussion that's why it should be discouraged. It is also a symptom of lack of discipline in students, especially the perennial latecomers. We teachers have the basic responsibility of teaching students the right discipline so that in the future, they already possess habits which are acceptable to the work place.

I am a trainer in a call center and a college professor as well. At the start of the training/semester I always make it a point to explain the policies which attendance is a part. I accept latecomers but only up to the time allowed as per policy. I understand that there are different reasons for them coming in late but they also need to be responsible enough and understand the reasons for coming up with such policy. They also have to respect the time and effort made by those people who always come on time.
