Why go into a shop 1 minute before it closes

May 27, 2007 8:20am CST
My wife works in a small shop and every night just before she locks the doors there is always a big influx of people rushing in to buy something. Why do people do this, surely they could have had plenty of time before, so why leave it to the last minute. Really frustrates her as she has to stay ;ater to tend to them and when she asks people to hurry up they look at her like she is dirt. God forbid she locks the doors and somebody is outside, they hurl abuse at her, why can't people understand the times of opening.

I used to work in a videogame store and the same thing would happen. I would have no customers for an hour and then right at closing time, a big group of kids would come in, not wanting to buy anything, just wanting to play the demos. So I started turning the demos off an hour before close, and at 5 minutes after closing, if they hadn't purchased anything, I'd inform them that the register was closing and if they needed to make a purchase they had 2 minutes to make their choices. Yeah, it ticked them off, but I got sick of being an hour late because they just wanted to waste time in my store. I learned that if you look and speak like you really mean business, and don't let them get to you with their nasty looks and insults, they actually tend to leave you alone. I hope it gets better for your wife.

i agree with you. You have to adopt an attitude to clear them out. I like the idea of turning the register off blessed be

Sounds like you have had it quite bad there. She just gets really frustrated that people leave everything until so late and she has to lose her time to cater for their selfishness. In genuine circumstances she is more than happy to help, but like in your comment, if they are just loitering around with no real intent on buying anything then she feels they are just wasting her time.

i worked in a shop for 10 years and found it happened almost every evening. I guess people only think of themselves and a a little disorganised when it comes to their own comfort. I cured one woman by taking an alarm clock in to work with me set for closing time. I will not work for free blessed be
