do you really understand the homily or not? or you just stare at the priest pretending that you are interested and understanding what the priest is saying in front of you...

well, for us catholics, when we say homily,, it refers to teachings and the explanation about the reading in the gospel in a holy eucharist celebration or the holy mass... in here, the priest sites an example through telling stories, related to the topic read. just like what Jesus did long time ago... he taught us through narrating stories and explained to us what did this mean...

So it's kind of like what Protestants call a sermon?

I usually listen and understand what our priest is saying during homily in our church because he actually makes his homily interesting and little bit entertaining. I also got into the habit of actually listening during homily because back in college, our professor in religion requires us every week to submit a paper about the priest's homily and our opinions regarding it. Thanks to that, I got used to paying attention during homily. And besides, it's much better to really listen and understand the priest rather than just sit there staring at him. Just staring and looking around during homily makes me sleepier than just listening to what the priest is saying.

back in my college and high school days... i also listen carefully to the homily because as what you have said, the teacher asks us his students to tell about the homily.. (i used to go to catholic school in my elementary and high school days, that's why). That's why until now, everytime i attend the holy mass, i see to it that i understand what the priest's homily...
