permanent solution to a closet mold problem?

i live in a very old house (147),and it has developed a problem with mold in one of the closets..in all those years,it hadn't done that before,so i'm figuring a change in the house must have caused it. the closet itself shares a wall with a chimney that is capped in the winter now-i suspect it has something to do with it. right now,i have those moisture crystal bags in it,which does remove the water from the air,but i'm looking for a permanent solution. insulation? venting?

I will definately be back to see what answers you get because I have the same problem. Very old house, plus damp climate= mould. Every year I battle it all winter, and then over the summer the house airs out and dries. A dehumidfier might help, bu that is pricey for just a closet. Can you leave the doors of it open so the heat goes in over the night? We have put a bunch of extra vents into the rooms but it hasn't helped all that much.

yup-that's exactly what it does,it's starting to dry out now. i tried leaving the door open to even out the temp, but all that did..was make the room stinky. we got the funk..we got the funk,ow.. LOL hadn't tried vents yet..i'm tempted to have one cut into the chimney area to make one big one,as the chimney isn't being used.

i have a lysol spray that works pretty well-i sprayed and wiped the shoes involved with it too. i fumed the closet and closed the door and it seemed to have cut a lot of it. the weird thing is-the crystal bags i have in there now? they collect the water in the bottom from the humidity, and it showed me one side of the closet is worse then the other-and the side i expected it to be,wasn't it! argh.. LOL

it needs air so venting is the answer .while you have your moistur crystal bags inside to help it dry up change the closet door with louvers so it would have a venting window and the closet would be so damp and place the insulation on the wall. i now you have thought of this already and i am just reververating it to you.good luck!
