the only explination they had was the vauge discription of all the tailed beasts being large amounts of chakra that gathered together to take on a masive solid form. and they pretty much leave it at that. there are also theories that they are truly just deamons that exsisted without no explination. who knows what they'll reveal latter on in the series.

I believe it's based on the Japanese mythological character, the kitsune (which also means fox in Japanese). The kitsune is a fox with nine tails, and it can transform into a human whenever it wishes. Its favorite food is abura age (fried tofu). It is generally considered sacred as the messenger of the rice god Inari, and is often portrayed in folklore as a trickster.

It is based on Japanese legend but not all kitsune have nine tails. They are the messengers of Inari, the god/goddess of rice and people supposedly used to leave offerings of rice to the fox spirits. A kitsune gains tails as it becomes more powerful and older. The nine tailed kitsune is supposed to be one of the strongest, and then after that it becomes a silver kitsune (I think) which is equivilent to having 10 tails. I've also heard kitsune usually gain a tail every 100 years.
