Recently I looked at my bank statement and saw a debit amount from something that I didn't buy for $14.95. When I called the number I was told that my daughter signed up for it through value magazine when she bought a magazine prescription. She DID not ask for this service, they snuck it on her..there was maybe a box that was probably checked and you needed to uncheck it if you didn't want to add it. ANyway, hubby called them and got it refunded. Then today I was looking at my Embarq phone bill and noticed that for 3 months I was charged for a voicemail service that I did not ask for nor did I have any idea of having. I was charged a 1 time setup fee for $9 one month and 2 months $8 something! When I looked up the name on the net I ran up on people who had had the same thing happen to them on their phine bill. They called embarq and was told that it was billed on behalf of this company and you need to call the number beside their services to cancel and get your money back. Well, this woman called the number and could not reach anyone. So, I did the same thing, I called the number on the bill and it was a blind company, a place that makes blinds!!! And she told me several people had called about this voice service! So I called Embarq and they said they would give me the number to call the company and I told her that the number on the bill was for a blind company but she started giving me a number and it was the same one I had called. I told her that that was the number I called and it was a blind company. So she said she would check the number and put me through and it went through and I talked to a lady (didn't speak good English either) and I gave her my phone number, told I didn't ask for this service, had not used this service but was charged for this service and I wanted it cancelled and my money refunded. She siad she cancelled it and that I would get my money refunded back to Embarq in 2 billing cycles! (isn't that something, that it takes that long to give me my money back??) Anyway, she says that it was signed up on the imternet. I told her that there was no way anyone signed up for a service that we don't want. I could get an answering service through Embarq, but I use just a plain ole answering machine. I think they slip this stuff on you when you order stuff on the net and I think it's fraud because you don't ask for it and they just bill you or take your money out of your account! It seems to be something that is happeneing alot nowadays! Has it happened to you? What did you do about it? Better start checking your phone bill real close! It still remains to be seen if I really get my money refunded back.

This is nothing new to a lot of American consumers. I've once work in a cellphone company and 80% of the calls I received are billing disputes. I know a lot of sales people signs up customers to services they're not aware of, or sometimes mislead them because they get commission on this. Sometimes some customers don't pay attention too. I know a lot of Americans are very busy and they don't take time to read the bill and just pay whatever the amount is. I hope you get the refund, but yes sometimes it does take 2 billing cycles to get your refund, it really depends on the company, it could also be written in the disclaimer somewhere in the bill. Anyway how long have you been paying the service? Just make sure that they put that on note who you spoke to and what your agreement was, because sometimes they just lie to you just so they could get you off the phone, and the next time you call the person that you might speak with might not even have an idea what was going on. I just hope everything turns out well!
