unmedicated ADHD?

Does anyone else here have an unmedicated adhd child? Our doctor wanted us to try 1600mg of omega-3 fish oil per day for about 6 months before we tried medication. So, that's what we've been doing for 4 months. So far, we have seen a little change but we were hoping for more improvement. Our doctor says it can be between 3 and 6 months before we see real improvement. I keep going on but I was wondering how other parents cope with unmedicated adhd children because I feel like pulling out my hair some days.

I believe that children with ADHD should have a complete evaluation by a Neurologist and a Psychiatrist and have the proper medication precribed. I don't believe children with ADHD can do without medication.

I'm sorry you believe that way but you also do not know what my son has had to endure in way of a diagnosis. He has been evaluated by many doctors, not just his primary care doctor. After his primary doctor began to lean towards ADHD, she forwarded us on to a psychiatrist, who, after several sessions with my son, forwarded us on to a specialist. Now we are under the care of the specialist who is working in conjunction with his primary care doctor to find the best solution that works for us. We do not believe in medicating ALL children. That is our opinion. You are entitled to your own but many of the children that I have seen who are on medication turn into zombies or spend the next 10 years trying to find the right dosage, play the "on meds, off meds" routine depending on whether they are in school or on vacation, look like twigs because the medication makes them lose their appetite (which would be devastating for my son because he is already naturally slender), or never really get a correct "fit" with medication. So, no, I would prefer that my child NOT be on medication. I'll take the more time consuming and frustrating behavior modification and fish oil over the "easy fix" of medication. Besides, this was a post asking for coping strategies not whether medication should be prescribed at all.

I think you are on the right trak. You are the parent and can see what no one eles can see and you are looking out for what is best for your child. I full understand where you are coming from. My 8 year-old was diganosed with ADHD and we tried the sattara and he had a bad side affect to it and was halucinating with it, would not eat, would not sleep. It is scary to see your child go thru this so I went surching for alternetives to the meds. We put him on Omega 3 fish oil, high in proten dite, Green Algie pills, along with meeting with a family counciler once a month on behaviror techinecs to use on him. It has helped and life with him is somewhat calm but it takes work.
