Well its a cable used to save the loss of power during the signal transmission. It uses the principle of total internal reflection to transmit signals over large distances. Though these are quite expensive but they do save a lot of power loss. The efficiency of it is very high. But the demerit of it is that you cant turn them too much. Till around 25-30 degrees its ok but after that it just might break down.

Have you ever considered how the signal is transmitted? For example is it sent out in bursts, how is it amplified, is it a pulse signal and at what speed does it travel?.I find this mind boggling and something I often comtemplate whilst fishing.

From memory it was introduced as an alternative to copper communication transfer wires, telephobe cableing etc. Many of the cable tv networks use it. Personally I reckon it makes great fantasy lamps and not bad for fishing with.

Yes most telecommunications and internet providers use fiber optics in its networks just like our company. Fiber optic is one of the cabling systems in the world. Instead of sending mechanically power or electricity, in fiber optics light is being propagated to travel over its network. This can lessen attenuation and other communication losses.
