My computer gets shut down and unplugged, cable and electric. I have three in the house. My mom's computer fried 4 years back, she heard the thunder, she got up to shut it down. she was 6 feet from the PC when lightning struck next doors shed, who was sharing a lightning cable with her house. She lost her hard drive, video card and a few house appliances. Peace:-)

I have never had a problem with the computer coming back after a storm. I probably have shot myself in the foot for saying it and it won't come back on sometime after a storm. lol Thanks! I worked hard today to get it once I found out how you got them to appear. ;)

In Singapore it is relatively safe. We can go about our activities indoor even when lightning flashes non-stop. Nothing will happen usually and thunderstorm or no, we can continue using our electrical appliances like our computers. ;-)

You don't have cloud to ground lightning? We do here in the U.S. and lightning does strike the same place twice. Thanx for responding! Peace:-)

No. If there is a lot of lightning I have a surge protector and were I live the power will go off if any big storms i.e. hurricanes come up.

I lost my last computer because of a thunder storm. It fried the modem then the next time my hard drive. I wasn't even on line,it came threw the telephone line. Now l have a surge protector that the telephone line plugs into. Its called Cyber Power and it works really good and has back up batteries, so things like a freezer keep running during a black out. This will even tell you if you have any electrical wiring faults. The extra bonus with this surger protector is when the power does go out l can plug a small lamp into it and have light for about an hour. I still turn my computer off when a l hear a thunder storm rumbling in the distance.

I will surely shut down my pc or notebook, especially when I'm running it on ac power, since any possible electrical surge will damage the computer, especially the motherboard which is the most expensive part of the laptop. Computer manufacturers also advise this since a lot of people would call them for technical support but will eventually boil down to finding out eventually that there was a thunderstorm when the problem occurred which is actually not really that visible outside the computer or the laptop. Some computer users recommend to purchase power surges or AVRs that can let you use the computer through any type of weather. Well, surely people will buy those things because they just can't afford to lose any of their work while using their machines on a stormy day. Well, seems like nowadays everybody has to come up with something just to get through our everyday work, even if it will cost a lot of money.

Well I dont shut anything down. My desktop PC is on a line conditioner which means it is isolated from all outside power. That also goes for my router. my line conditioner has taken a thunder storm and been hit. nothing happened. Now my Laptop computers I just unplug them from the power and nothing can touch them with out wires. :)

I shut it down because my computer has been struck by lighting twice. One time it was hit it was still on and the other time it wasn''t but it was plugged up in the surge protector.

For me it depends on how bad the storm is. Our router has been hit by lightning a couple of times and so we now unplug it when we get a more severe storm. I will often unplug my laptop and run on batteries at least to finish what I am doing or until we shut the router down. I will also unplug the surge protector if it is a severe storm.

For some reason my current home seems prone to lightning strikes. I've lost telephone service a few times and the modem on my pc while it was shut off but still plugged in during a storm that I didn't even know happened (I was at work in a place that didn't have the storm). When there's a storm I make sure I turn everything off. I do have a surge protector but with the phone service it's touch and go.

Even though you have a surge protector you should unplug that as well, lightning travels through the line to your PC. It travels through electric, phone, and cable lines it's good to diconect all the lines. Thanx for your response! Peace:-)
