And for a quick answer:
Email: Email stands for Electronic Email. It was created by a Massachusetts engineer named Ray Tomlinson who made no money out of it at all. He did not patent the @ sign nor his email program invention and says he has no regrets. Tomlinson says he chose the @ symbol because of it's symbolic meaning: “at” as in “someone@someplace”. The first email he sent, which is of course the first email ever sent, said: "QWERTYUIOP". This has no meaning. It is only the letters on the first row of your keyboard.
