Cellular phone users, help!

I'm looking to get a new cellular phone, but I am confused about the various plans. I'd like to have a phone that doesn't require a contract and would let me pay as I go. But, there are so many to choose from.
Can you give me recommendations on a cell phone service that you use? Would very much appreciate your help.

I dont know what is available in your area. But I use verizon. Its awesome! U can get the prepaid phones too. U get free verizon to verizon minutes....which EVERYONE in my area is switching to verizon as more and more towers are going up. U get free min after 9pm. Its great! I love my verizon phone.
