do you say 'hi' first or let the other person say it first?

are you usually the first one to take the initiative and smile or say hi to your friend or a person you know?? or do you usually wait and let the otehr person greet you first and then you respond??are you reluctant to do that first?? if so, why??

i wait for the person in front of me to take the initiative. but if he is my boss or for that matter the president of india, definitely i will say hi first.
