Would you swerve to miss hitting an animal in the road?

I know my mother tends to do this, despite how dangerous it can be. We were talking about how she'd avoided hitting a turtle trying to cross the road, but the person about two hundred feet behind her just splattered the little donatello wanna be. What are your thoughts? Swerve, or no swerve?

Awww that poor little fellow, it wasn't as if he could run very fast hey. I swerve if it is safe to do so. Otherwise I actually come to a stop. I had this problem the other day with a dog who didn't know which way he was gonna try and run. I had to stop the car until he got to the other side safely. At least by doing this I made sure some child would not be without their pet.

I have this tendency myself, to swerve or stop for a critter. The thing is it's a respect for life in general, as it keeps me focused on the road, and it may help me avoid hitting a human child at some point too.

I will certainly slow down, even stop to avoid hitting an animal. But I will not swerve my car. That just puts me, my family, and other drivers at risk. My instinct is to slam on the brakes, not to swerve the car. Which, this can actually be just as dangerous--I almost got rearended because I stopped to avoid a dog in the road. The car behind me had to swerve onto a side road to avoid hitting me. I really didn't stop suddenly--but they weren't expecting me to come to a complete stop. So either way can be dangerous.

A slower and stopper huh? Thanks for your response. If the car behind you had to swerve then they were too close and not paying attention. :)

I have never hit an animal in 25 years of driving. I swerve, I break and I would hit a wall before I would hit an animal. Nothing pisses me off more than people driving with their head up their a*s and not even slowing down. If someone rear ends me from me stopping for an animal it is their fault for following too close. I honk and alert animals so they leave the roadway whenever possible. I am a swerver.

I would definitely slow down or come to a stop without making to much of a dangerous scene for the other drivers. I dont wanna hit a animal..to me thats no good so I would defnitely try to avoid it without compromising the safety of others.

I always swerve. However, one should bear in mind that this can lead to an accident if you carelessly do it. I think it is human nature for most of us not to want to kill another living thing...therefore we swerve. cheers,

SWERVE! I don't know again depends on the animal I guess. If it is a snail or a crab (happens in some places) I'd just drive over it...lol. But some other bigger or cuter animal, I cannot help it I'll just follow my instincts and swerve to avoid hitting the poor thing

If I can, I try to avoid the animal. I've hit a bird once that basically flew into my car, nothing I could do to miss it. And I was hit by a deer once. I stopped to let a few deer finish running across the street, and this one ran right into my driver's door. Put a good sized dent in my car & kept on running. Again, I tried to avoid the animal & it hit my car anyway.

Yes as long as it didn't put my life in danger and as long as it wasn't going to cause an accident with other motorists. I once ran over a cat (accident) and it was very very upsetting.

I know it's a truly horrible feeling to run over something like a cat or dog. You just know someone is going to be missing them. Been there and know how it feels

If it is not giving danger to you then you can miss hitting the animal. My husband dont like to kill animals on the road so as possible as he can he will not hitting animals. But if its too dangerous he dont have any choice but to hit it.

I tend to swerve to miss the animals. Although I have heard to just hit them instead of trying to miss them this is coming from a cop.

You're right from a 'safe' driving stand point it's suggested you don't swerve. If it's not going to hurt anyone or anything though, why not? This is especially true of larger animals like deer that constantly wreck people's trucks. lol you could ask my mother how many grills she had to get replaced in the last few years.
