Do you have to sleep with the air-conditioner on at night in summer?

I have been recently trying to cut down my electricity bill and I was wanting to decrease the use of the air-conditioner in the summer time (due to environmental protection too). But I find the weather is too humid and hot at night. I have the fan on but still it's really hard for me to fall asleep because it's kind of sticky and not really comfortable. I have to turn my air-con on every night so as to maintain a good sleeping quality. What about you?

Hello, wondericequeen,i know that the weather in Hong kong is very wet,it is totally different from australia. I do not need to switch on the fan or air conditioner even in the summer, the dry climate in australia make people feel comfortable,at the night time,it will always be cooler than the day time, the cool dry weather make me fall asleep easily. I can imagine it will be uncomfortable in a hot and wet city in the summer as you will keep sweating alot throughot the day.

You are lucky to live in such a nice country. I think we all feel very uncomfortable when it's humid. It's just driving people nuts and besides, the humidity makes me really tired even without doing anything. That's why I love the autumn and winter more around here as it's absolutely dry.

I regard myself as someone who can stand hot weather (I wear cotton long sleeves tee shirts in summer! haha!), but if I'm trying to get some sleep in the hot and humid summer nights, I need to have my air-conditioner on, cause I just can't calm myself down and I'll get very annoyed when I'm in such a "hot bed"! I can only sleep without the air-con (even without the fan) when the temperature is below 30oC. I think the design of the housing estates is also a part of the reason forcing us to shut our windows and turn the air-conditioners on. With our windows facing our neighbours', it's hard not to turn the air-con on and keep the hot & polluted air out if our neighbours turn their air-con on.

Right that's true! It would be hard not to turn on the air-con and try to keep other polluted air away from us. I think it's also because our apartments are built with cement and concrete and that just makes the whole building even hotter. When I was in Thailand and lived in those wooden houses, I felt a sense of coolness inside the house. I think the wood really works wonders on reducing the heat.

You are right.when it gets too hot,we have to keep the air conditioner on throughout the night, inspite of knowing fully well that it harms the environment.

Right, it's really hard to cut down the air-con. I absolutely won't turn it on during the day but at night I really do need some decent sleep to get my next day going.

It has been raining here lately, so it's not very hot at night. So it's not necessary for us to turn on the air-conditioner yet. We use the fan when we are sleeping. And sometimes we will feel cold and even cover the quilt at night. We will turn on the air-conditioner in the livingroom. As it'll be hot there especially when we have a meal. If it'll be hot later, then we will use the air-conditioner in our bedroom. But it's likely that we won't turn it on for a whole night. It's wasting and usually we will feel cold at night later.

If I didn't sleep with the window airconditioner on during the night time, I'd nearly suffocate. And, sleeping with the airconditioner turned off makes me too hot, so I have nightmares and can't rest well, too. You might consider using a box fan turned to medium. It will help keep the air stirred in your room and provide a nice noise barrier to the outside world.

If it's hot, then yes. I absolutely have the worst nights trying to sleep when it's hot. I don't know why, but I just cannot sleep. The combination of the heat and my body's reaction to it is awful. So I usually have the A/C on, or at least the tower fan by the bed. Our tower fan is really good, so at night that's all we need... it uses much less energy than the A/C. But the A/C will be running for a while at night...

I sleep with the aircon on all the time regardless of weather because our house was built without ceiling fans and built in aircon so.. like it or not, we make use of it. And using a table fan is just too hot.. but one thing about using air-cons are, I sneeze immediately when I wake up in the morning. I guess I need those anti-allergens or something like that..

Hi, wondericequeen. When it gets very muddy and hot in our apartment me or my husband may turn on the Central Air. We don't have an air conditioner in our apartment. Turning this air on really helps. When I stayed at my in-laws trailer last summer, we slept with the fan in the window. We had the cool air from outside blowing inside of our room as we slept at night. It really felt good to feel this air on us.

it's really hot during the day in here so we really have to turn the aircondition on for a few hours in the afternoon just so it wouldnt be as hot as the outside. luckily during the night, we only need to turn it on for about 3-4 hours because it gets really cold and everyone can sleep peacefully even if it's turned off already. electric fan is enough to blow the cold air aroud the room so we dont really need to have the aircon running the whole night.

I am currently staying in Chennai, India. This place is very humid and that's the reason I have rented an AC room. Here also we can't sleep in the room if we don't switch ON the AC. Mostly what we do here is that we switch ON the AC as we return from office and once the room is cooled, we switch OFF the AC and switch ON the fan and go to bed. Still sometimes during the midnight we feel that room has become warm and we switch On the AC again.
