Why is Pot Still Not Legal in the U.S.???

I haven't been on MyLot very long, so I don't know if this issue has been ran into the ground enough. But, I'm going to complain now, it's my turn. I don't understand why pot is such a big issue in this country. For crying out loud, this is the 21st century, I'm thinking the government should catch up with the times. Pot should NOT still be listed under 'controlled substance' or whatever. It should be catagorized with alcohol & tobacco. I have alot of reasons for this way of thinking. Here's one- Our local mill has a shift change at 3pm, and when some of those people get off work, they go to the bar and sit there, DRINKING, until 9 or 10pm, then they get in their cars and DRIVE home!!!! Some of them live in Grants Pass, 30 miles away!! But, I can't sit in my room, behind closed doors, and smoke a joint!!! WHAT??? Pot should have the same age and legal restrictions(such as driving), as alcohol. We have cops in this town who know all this, and yet they let people drive away from the bar. I live in the largest county in my state, and we only have 7 cops for the WHOLE COUNTY!! I know why the law is lax in some instances, but when the local cop knows which houses the drug dealers live in, and he dosen't do anything, even though it's right by the high school, I find myself having a big problem. I have a solution to this... If the government legalized pot, sold business licenses(for independent citizens to grow and sell), taxed it(like cigarettes), and sold it commercially by the 10 or 20 pack of joints, the government would have more money for schools and the police. Who cares where the money comes from?? As long as our children were being educated and protected. The next thing is the health issue. It's okay for me to drink myself into a stupor, but not take a few hits off a pipe. The effects to my liver due to the alcohol worries me more than the build-up in my lungs. I've never heard of someone dying from smoking too much pot, but I know someone who died from alcohol poisoning. Plus, pot is prescribed by doctors to fight cancer, muscle spasms, glaucoma, nausea. I don't recall a doctor prescribing a 5th of Jack Daniels per day to anybody. I happen to have a serious back problem- a compressed vertebre from a car accident, and an extra vertebre in my lower lumbar due to a heredity thing. My dad and aunt both had back surgery, and eventually I will end up on the table, too. Pot is the only thing(short of Nuproxen), that lets me stay mobile by my own will. I don't want to be on Nuproxen for long periods of time, because I don't know what other medications I will have to take to treat whatever the long-term Nuproxen use does to me. Side effect are my last argument for this topic. How do you know what the long-term effects are for some of the meds out there. I know my side effects from pot are simple- like the munchies. How harmless is that?? Or like tiredness. You mean I might actually sleep all night instead of waking up to readjust my back??? Oh, man... that sucks!! I think the government just likes keeping all control!! Pot should not be in the same catagory as cocaine or crank. I think there should be a vote. Not by majority, but by numbers of people who say yes. If more than 10,000 people want to change this law, it should be. Just my opinion for the day.

Thanks for your response!! I needed a good laugh this morning!! Watch out for those bongs, they cause massive memory disturbances!! As for the smoke-out, ever heard of 'Burning Man'?? Giant party in the desert where they set a GIANT wooden man on fire and party for 3 days!! Or... There's always my house!! Thanks again!!
