Ok I was wondering if anyone has ever had an oophorectomy done? If so how long did it take you to recover? Are there any long term side effects to it? How has it changed your chances of having children? Have you changed your mind about having children since having it done? Any information on the subject would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I haven't had one, but working in the medical field I've heard about them. If they don't do a bilateral oophorectomy, then one might still be able to have more kids. Also the possibility of early-onset surgical menopause is lessened. If they do the procedure through laparoscopy, it should only take a couple of days to recover enough to return to most normal activities. The long-term effects would be hormone depletion. When they do the procedure the hormones produced in the ovaries are gone (or halved in a partial). Then medications to replace them would probably be required. Just like for menopause. Hope this helps a little.

Oh thats just freaking wonderful.. so you're saying that I'll have to take medication forever if I have it done, great, that sucks big time. Its only going to be a partial( only one getting yanked out) still I don't think I want to have to deal with the side effects of not being me. I'm already moody and emotional, I don't need any help in making me even more unbalanced. :(

Angel, I don't think you'd have to take the medications forever. And you might not have to take anything. The doctors can do blood work to find out about the hormone levels. It's something the doctors would monitor.

Well I've gotten a packet of everything the surgery intales and what to expect after having it. With all the information that I've gotten I can sit and make a logical decision on what my course of action will be.
