I suffer from severe depression, anxiety, and panic attacks. I have 4 kids aged 20, 15, 12, and 9. How hereditary is the disorder? My oldest is taking Cymbalta for anxiety and depression, how closely should I watch the other children?

I had heard some people said depression can be inheritage by their kids .But according to the research depression is not primarily a biological disorder. However, as we grow up, we do learn life attitudes and behavioral habits from those around us, so from this point of view depression as a way of seeing and behaving can be passed on.

I think you should watch the other children. If you are depressed, chances are one of your other children are depressed. However, it may be that they take after their father. Can you take them to a doctor who would best tell you what to look out for, the signs, etc.?

Don't watch them so closely that you trigger your own symptoms and make them worse. Continue to just monitor and see if you get any indicators that there may be a problem. Like your first response says, it is not likely that they will all have any characteristics, but you still want to keep a watchful eye. Good Luck to you and your family.
