How much money do you spend on car repairs every year?

Nowadays, we spend about $1300 yearly to keep our old hunk of junk running. We own it free and clear, so that's a bonus. And, honestly, I assumed that owning a car outright would be a real money savings. But, it hasn't turned out that way. Every month we replace a tire. And, my husband insists on buying a used tire everytime, so it ends up blowing out two months later. And, then it's more money to replace. Then there's the countless times we've fixxed the engine, transmission, etc. And, he won't get the car fixed at the dealership and insists on taking it to shade-tree mechanics. I'm no expert when it comes to cars, but even I see that one coming! How about you? Do you spend an unreasonable amount of money every year to keep your car running? What's your biggest car repair expense?
