Other than obvious (one is a movie, the other a multi year tv series) how do you compare the Godfather series of movies and the HBO TV series The Sopranoes? I think the Sop. are a modern day, contemporary version of the Godfather...your thoughts?

I agree. The Godfather was a history of one Mafia family and how they lived. The Sopranos is contemporary Mafia.

I like the godfather movies much better than the Sopranos. I would call the three Godfathers classic mobster movies. The Sopranos is a series of mobsters killing each other off. There is always someone being killed on the Sapranos for being a rat. I do not think that there is so much killing in mobsters family because they know what will happen to them, therefore they would be afraid to betray the family.

I say the same thing. I like the Sopranos. Even though I don't have HBO I still catch them on A&E. I think it's a great show.

I haven't seen enough of sopranos to compare them. Although I've never liked the godfather and prefer other gangster movies especially the uk's. Or the good old fashioned American back in the black and white days and the gangster films was all about chasing shooting and ruining the others. ~Joey

To be really detailed about it, the Godfather series focused on the group dynamics involved with La Cosa Nostra. The Sopranos delved into the psychology and psychopathy of members of the New Jersey Mob...in particular the actual leader (Tony) rather than the leader (Junior) everyone thought headed the LCN there.

The Godfather is the greatest mafia movie of all time, according to me. I also am absolutely addicted to the Sopranos. I have all the seaons and watch them over and over again. As for a comparison...the Godfather depicts a mob family...a real family with family values (except the Alfedo incident, which you do not know about until a later sequel). I have head a lot about the Italian mob...it is one of my interests. In the Godfather, family is very important...they respect each other, they look out for each other (again with the exception of Alfredo). The pefect example is Michael. He never wanted to be in the business but got involved when his father got shot. In the Godfather, just like in any respected Italian family, family comes first and above all. In the Sopranos...it is waaaayyyy too modern day. Tony, being the head of the mob family, should act as a respectful husband and father. Nowhere in the Godfather does Vito cheat on his wife or swear at his kids. The Godfather, from what I have read about the Italian mob, is the true face of the Italian mob...be admired by your family, be respected by your "friends" and be feared by your enemies. The Sopranos, although wonderful in its own right, is just entertainment and does not really portray the mob as the mob was intended to be portrayed.

I think the Sopranos clearly portrays todays modern italian-american mobster. Over the years, Italian values have deeply changed in the United States. Back then, family was the center of these people's lives, Italians would place it before evrything else. People were proud to be part of their family's. Today, with the internet and many other technologies, the family isn't as important. So the way I see it, is that the Sopranos is a kind of evolution form the Godfather era. What do you think?
