I look after dictionaries when I really need some god synonyms to describe something. i remember my English Teacher's words, "Try yourself to find the meaning first then ask if you can't get" Ya that habit of looking into dictionaries is still sometimes now with me. What about you? Do you refer dictionaries? How often?

I refer to dictionaries as and when I see words I do not know or need confirmation for. My habit is quite good in that sense. Unless I am too lazy, which to be fair happens "enough" times, I will normally pull up the dictionary when necessary.

You are right. One good use of mylot. Whenever you try to elaborate something you will need some good words and dictionary is the way to help out and in that way mylot is also helping to build your vocab and English knowledge too. Thanks for responding.

Hey ibs, Great discussion you've got going here-when I was growing up I started a tradition that I passed on to my son.I would look up & high lite a new word everyday in the dictionary & before you know it you can't turn a single page of the dictionary w/o seeing high-lited words. I use dictionary.com if I'm online pretty regularly also. +'s 2 U :D

You are giving your son a great lesson I think. Adding a single word a day is very good to build a good vocab and also try to let him use the word in his lessons too, so that he can remember them for long. Thanks for responding.

I do refer to dictionary from time to time but this time I refer to my encarta dictionary installed to my computer. Sometimes when I have nothing to do, I like browsing through it and learn new words.

Very good practice indeed. We should try to implement those new words in writings also to memorize it for long. Thanks for responding.

It has been years I have looked up a dictionary. I do not even have a dictionary at home. I use online dictionary nowadays and it is rather frequent as I need the dictionary to support me while I made responses. I look them up for spelling or to check meaning of words.

i thnk for those who english are not their mother tounge will always refer to their dictionary as usually they r lack in vocabulary. for me when i was in secondary school i need dictionaries whenever i have to read english books. but now as i'm in university now, i realise that my vocabulary have been improved by time. but sometimes, i still need dictionary for some rare words. i think if we r lack in vocabulary and use dictionary often we can improve our vocab.

I always refer to dictionaries especially when i'm reading something in a book that i can't hardly understand. When i was in highshool,i always go to the library to read some words from the dictionaries not just to refer a word from it. Some dictionaries also has some simple sentence how to use the word you are referring to.

I remember while I was in school I use to use it every paper that I wrote. Not really because I didn't know the meaning of the word, but to see if there was a different word that I could use.
