What is the Purpose of the Iraq War?

Alright, before any of you get your knickers in a twist over the subject, I want to explain a few things. First off, I am Canadian. Secondly, I was and am very anti Iraq war...and this is why... I know you all were hurt in 9/11. It was a terrible disaster done to the American people by AlQaeda. AlQaeda attacked the Twin Towers - NOT the Iraqi people. But it is the Iraqi people who are being attacked by the USA. I read all the time about the Iraqi terrorists that America is fighting, but the Iraqi people themselves did not attack the USA...and no one has been able to justify to me why the USA can't be considered to be terrorizing the Iraqi people. It seems to me when a country regardless of what it is walks in and starts to bomb and shoot and carry on like bullies that that is terrorizing. Iraqis get called insurgents, but they are in their own country, they are fighting for their own way of life. Why is Americanizing a middle eastern country 1)the right thing to do, 2)not considered a form of terror? Why is the American way of life the only proper way of life? Woman and children and innocents are dying every day, soldiers are being killed...can someone explain to me the reasoning behind this because I sure can't see it. If you want a war, fight it with the people who have wronged you, not men and women trying to protect their lives, homes and country. Seems to me George needs to stop acting like the schoolyard bully stealing kids lunch money, swallow his pride, pull his troops out and leave the innocents in Iraq alone.

You have a few things wrong. 1- Al Queda was in close contact with Iraq, Saddam made it clear he would harbor and aid terrorists. http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/006/550kmbzd.asp http://www.cfr.org/publication/9513/ http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,84291,00.html http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/02/05/sprj.irq.alqaeda.links/ http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,2763,779359,00.html http://www.floppingaces.net/2007/02/11/no-evidence-of-a-saddam-osama/ 2- You aren't realizing a difference between the Iraqi insurgents and the Iraqi people. The Iraqi people aren't fighting to rid themselves of the American invader, the insurgents (many times not even Iraqis, but Syrians, Iranians, Saudis, etc) are fighting because its the closest place to fight Americans. Many of the Iraqis still want us there and they surely wanted us there to begin with. Iraq will be a better country when it gets itself together and starts running itself independently. 3- The US didn't attack the Iraqi people, it removed the Iraqi government. The US military is fighting a limited war against Iraq to protect its civilians. US troops are having trouble securing the country because they aren't fighting an army. They cant shoot civilians until the civilians whip out an AK from behind their babies or use a car to blow up a hospital. The US military isn't the one killing innocents, they do their best not to and in return they are more vulnerable. It is the terrorists trying to take the country or kill westerners or create propaganda for AL Jazeera that explicitly make it their point to kill civilians.

Maybe alqaeda was in contact with the Iraqi government...but was it in close contact with the innocents men , women and children there too? And I have yet to hear any explanation why or how Iraq will be better with the American influence. I know my life would not be improved, but rather worsened by becoming 'One nation under George W.' You got Saddam out...he is never coming back, now it's time to pull the troops, swallow your pride and get the heck out of Iraq. Maybe minding your own business and helping your own country first would be a help too. The US has made itself the worlds police and quite frankly, if your own yard is a mess how can you expect anyone to want you to come weed theirs? Also you said the insurgents weren't necessarily referring to the Iraqi people, but rather others who are going there because it is easy access to the US...So if the US gets the heck out of Iraq, then the poor Iraqi people can move on and won't have to worry about their children dying because the US - once again - is where they don't belong fighting other countries on their Iraqi soil. How can you then justify the killing of so many innocents because the Saudis or Iranians or Syrians are going to Iraq to fight the US...are you just using Iraq for it's land to fight or are you thinking they are an expendable people? EIther way, no matter how you try to justify anything, no one has been able to explain to me the purpose. I'm thinking more and more that the previous commenter was right in saying it is all for oil.

You completely ignored my point of how the innocent people aren't dying because of the US military, and the delineation of why that reasoning isn't right. The reasons are clear, you just might not agree with them. As far as I'm concerned taking saddam out and fighting terror was helping America.

Depite what the president may SAY, the only reason I can think of that we are at war with Iraq is oil. I haven't heard of any weapons of mass destruction in a long time and it's not like we ever actually found any. The war in Iraq is pointless, other than for our president to misuse his power and try to fatten his own pocket. There is no reason why we should be losing lives of our fathers, brothers, and sons over something so trivial. The president is a donkey and his actions just manifest this.

I believe you are very right about the oil. And yes, there were no weapons found to this day...so the logic of the war is lost on me...
