I remember that. Square use to produce other games but they didn't do well. Final Fantasy exceeded their expectations. It was so great it put Square back into gear and Square decided to release a sequel Final Fantasy 2, there after. Its also famous due to the fact that the sequel was not a direct storyline sequel of the first Final Fantasy. This trend would continue non-stop for future Final Fantasies until Final Fantasy X-2. Final Fantasy also serves as an icon and flagship for the company. It also spun off a "gaiden" or sidestory, known to gamers by large as Seiken Densetsu (the Mana series). That series would also have good success with its first game but even better success with the second game Seiken Densetsu 2 (Secret of Mana 1 elsewhere). Other true, semi or indirect spinoffs of Final Fantasy include Kingdom Hearts, Chocobo Dungeon/Racing, an anime series Unlimited, and even a movie The Spirits Within (-_-).
