To Tithe or Not to Tithe?

was in church yesterday and you've already guessed right, the issue was tithing. This topic relates mainly to Christian faithfuls. The preacher continued this long dissertation on tithing. He rankled me I must say. He quoted extensively from the Old testament, Malachi 3 vs 10. The grouse I have with tithing is there is no where it is preached by Jesus or any of the apostles...it is all in the old testament, why the emphasis by preachers on it.If they want to follow the Old testament, let them do and if it is the New Testament let them follow it. I believe that one should give what one wants to give...it may be more than the tithe for all I care, but one should not be compelled to pay tithes.

God loves cheerful givers, and he blesses those who give tithes and offerings. If you don't tithe you're robbing God, and He won't bless you because you're not showing that you trust him to take care of you with the 90% of the rest of your income.

I was taught that what we have was given to us by God. He commands us to give back to the church. We are giving back to him what was given to us. It is not ours, it is his. And if we follow his command, he will provide for us. So maybe if you think of it this way, it doesn't seem so strange?

As believers in Christ, we are instructed several times in the Bible to tithe (or give 1/10) of our earnings to God. One tenth is a tithe and anything above that is a gift. Those that don't follow Christ and the instructions set forth in the Bible tend to not understand that nothing is ours in the first place, it is all God's. He gives it to us and He takes it away. People that don't go to church or only go on occasion also tend to think that churches are money hungry. I'm sure that there are "churches" that are that way, but a sound Bible-believing, Bible-teaching, Evangelical church is not out for your money.

To God it only matters what you give freely. But also churches need money and when people will not give freely they must ask for it. The New Testament speaks of giving, not the tithe, but all you want. Paul says: "beyond their capabilities". Jesus watches a poor woman giving all she has, and also asks of th rich young man, that he must give everything to the poor.
