How do you tell a child about a death

How do you tell a child about death that will happen soon?? We are raising our grandaughter that is 9 years old and is mentally challenged.. since our daughter who has been sick for 3 months doesnt have much time to be here on earth, she has cancer.. our grandaughter is very close to her mom, and she doesnt have the heart to tell her daughter about not having much time on earth.. what would be you advice to handle our grandaughter?? should her mom tell her or have a therapist till her about her mom??
