Take their licence away!

Seriously, I mean, people shouldn't be driving after they hit a certain age. I think that after a certain age, the ability to react slows down. You hear so often about older people causing accidents purely out of being absent minded. After a certain age, let's say 65, they should be retested every so often for reaction time and ability to stay focused. I read today in the paper, how a 84 year old woman ran over an 18 month old baby and kept going , because she didn't notice. This is what sparked me to write this topic. So what do you think? Revoke licences after a certain age or have older people retested every year?

We can not be discrimitive. I understand that when a person gets a certain age their senses may dull. However, my dad is over 65 and he is a very good driver. He doesn't stop in the middle of the highway like some. The problem is drivers in general. There are too many distractions. The younger generation is driving their friends around and talking and joking not watching the road. Then there are others talking on their cell phones that cause accidents. I agree that after maybe 70 there should be a driving test taken just to make sure we are ok to drive. I also think that more restrictions are needed for the teen drivers as well. Accidents can happen no matter what age you are.

I am 57 and I already do not drive at night due to night blindness. I just won't do it. I agree as an older driver that we should be tested at least once a year. Our eyesight gets worse and we have more problems. There are older drivers who do and can drive responsiblily and well but there are others who should not be driving at all. I won't drive if I cannot see well or feel uncomfortable about my reflexes. I agree with you.

I have to laugh because I agree with you on this. The reason I agree is because I've ridden in the car with my grandmother while she was driving and I will be the first to tell you its a life changing event. After the ride is over you're just happy to be alive. I swear this woman has driven backward down a one way street before because she didn't know it was one way and she wanted to be facing the rest of the trafic as she drove. I've seen some older people literally drive on the sidewalk almost taking out mail boxes as they go. I figure if you can't see over the steering wheel then you shouldn't be allowed to drive lol.

LOL I agree to that one. We had an old lady drive right through the entrance of a supermarket, she didn't notice she was going the wrong way. She had to drive at least 100-150 feet cler across the parking ot to get to the door, so that shows some real slow reaction time lol. Nobody got hurt and she didn't even get a ticket or anything.

I would say that after 70 this should be done as I know some very good drivers who are 65 plus.

Don't just yank their license away but definitely test them every year. Some older people are good and careful drivers. Younger ones are also a danger - listening to loud music, text messaging, etc. while they are driving.

I don't agree with revoking the licence only because just as there are some individuals on the road who are not fit when they are older there are just as many that are very responsible and have no problems and are good drivers but I do agree with retesting once you hit a certain age to make sure that you have the capability still to think fast when something happens and that you are not a hazzard on the road as often you will get behind someone going so slow that they are more of a hazzard on the road then not . Mnay of the older people are half blind and still taking the chance out on the road everyday and this is dangerous to all those on or near the side of the road . I do belive that having them retested to make sure they are not a liablility on the road would be an excellent idea .

Maybe a retest might be necessary every 4 years but i don't think they should have thier liscence revoked. I have to say they might drive slower than most people but there are a lot of younger people who are irresponsable drivers who are not paying attention, drunk or simply don't care.

Yes, but that is due to stupidity and if they get caught they should certainly lose their licence. But with old people there is more to it, Due to their age they will often lose reflexes and they should be retested every year to make sure they still have a good reaction time.

I don't think people should automatically have their licences taken away. I think they should be retested regularly like you suggested. I wouldn't say 65, I think that's a little young, where I live, it's 80.

They should indeed be retested every year, and in fact, everyone should be retested every two years. Some old people might cause accidents like that one, but most accidents are caused by teens and young adults who drank too much and tried to drive, to impress, or something like that.
