transfer video to pc

I have a Samsung video camera and tried to load video to my pc with the software provided but quality was crap. I just want to put video to pc to edit and put family outings etc to dvd. What am I doing wrong? Is this what i should expect? I dont have any capture card or anything just running to usb? Please help
