well lets start with eating citrus fruits liek oranges and dalanghita. drink a lot of liquids and juices and soups as well. but the most effective of all is vaporizing. boil water then when it boils pour oil of eucalyptus then smell the fumes it will make you feel better.

Lemon Fruits - Good for Common Colds - Lemon is the most important among the many home remedies for common cold. It is beneficial in all types of cold with fever. Vitamin C- rich lemon juice increases body resistance, decreases toxicity and reduces the duration of the illness.
Since you don't like to take oral medications, i suggest you do these home remedies and preparations using common fruits and vegetables. Lemon and/or calamansi - One lemon or 5-7 calamansi fruits should be diluted in a glass of warm water, and a teaspoon of honey should be added to it. This should be taken once or twice daily. Garlic soup is an old remedy to reduce the severity of a cold, and should be taken once daily .The soup can be prepared by boiling three or four cloves of chopped garlic in a cup of water. Ginger- About 10 gm of ginger should be cut into small pieces and boiled in a cup of water. It should then be strained and half a teaspoon of sugar added to it. This decoction should be drunk when hot. Ginger tea - can be prepared by adding a few pieces of ginger into boiled water before adding the tealeaves. It may be taken twice daily. In my case, i take the herbal lagundi capsule which is known to be very effective against cough. For colds, I usually rub and massage my chest and back portion with vaporub.

I'd say lots of lukewarm water and rest. Also calamansi juice. When I have colds, I would often buy fresh calamansi (I don't know the english term for this:P) from the grocery. What I'd do is to cut up about 5 pieces of this fruit, squeeze it in a glass, remove the seeds and add a dash of salt to it. Then I drink it straight up. It sure cures the cold quick!:)

Home treatments should never take the place of consulting your doctor for any of the conditions listed above, but there are several things you can do at home to make your child more comfortable. If you has asthma, make sure you have received asthma-management instructions from your child's doctor. Monitor your child's progress carefully during a flare-up and give asthma medicines according to the doctor's instructions. If you wakes up with a "barky" or "croupy" cough in the middle of the night, take him or her into the bathroom, close the door, and let the shower run on hot for several minutes. After the room steams up, sit in the bathroom with your child for about 20 minutes. The steam should help your child breathe more easily. Try reading a book together to keep you occupied. Cool beverages like juice can be soothing; avoid carbonated or citrus drinks, however, because carbonation and citric acid can be painful on raw areas.

What I personally do to fight these things is: Drink lots of orange juice For dinner have spicy food, I usually do a mexican or indian curry dish. Clears all the garbage out of your chest and sinuses and fortifies you up with vitamin C....

Almonds are useful for dry coughs. Seven kernels should be soaked in water overnight and the brown skin removed. They should then be ground well to form a fine paste. A quantity of twenty grams each of butter and sugar should then be added to the paste. This paste should be taken in the morning and evening.

If you don't like to take oral medications for cough and colds, just drink as much water as you can. Water can help get rid of the virus via urine. I suggest you try to see how it works on you. But I usually take capsules for syrup and headache. To me, it works. I mean, capsules.
