I know that the Atkins diet is supposed to produce great results, but I'm not sure how having an all you can eat fat category in any diet can be healthy! My thing is this, for sustaining long term weight loss and a healthier lifestyle, you actually NEED TO HAVE CARBS. Complex carbohydrates are some of the best stuff you can eat, right up their with fiber and protein. The complex carbs gives you the energy you need to make it through the day and it doesn't just turn to fat like simple carbs such as sugar. Can anyone give me their opinion on this?

I don't see how eliminating carbs completely can be healthy either. I tried the Atkins diet once. I didn't last past one meal. lol. I love my carbs. I like proteins too but just the thought of eating only meat and green veggies makes my stomach turn. I am completely at a loss for what is the best way to balance nutrition now. I wan't to lose some weight but for some reason I am completely confused about what I need more of and what I need less of. I think we're supposed to have mostly fruits and veggies but I think fruits contain a lot of sugar and although I'm not diabetic, it does run in my family and I do seem to have some issues with sugar. Eating mostly veggies doesn't sound very appetising though.

I never went on the Atkins diet, but I know that for some people, even complex carbohydrates should be taken in lower amounts. When I have more than two slices of bread or the equivalent in pasta, and rice, I gain or my weight stays the same. You can eat healthy with meat, fruit, vegetable, and salad, and a small portion of complex carbohydrates. You do not need the extra slice of bread and the buns on the side.
