Is calling my baby cute a sign of arrogance?

I was at a baby show the other day where my 6 week old son won five categories. I was bundling his ribbons and trophies in his baby bag when a woman approached me and asked to have a look at him. He was asleep in his pram and i said to the woman that it was fine for her to admire him. She did the usual "awe he's lovely" to which i replied "yeah he is a bit of a cutie!" The woman stood back abruptly and says "well hes a goodlooking boy but you don't have to flaunt it just because you have all those prizes stuffed in there." I mean is that rude or am i reading to much into it. i just said he was a cutie not that he was better than any other child there. And why would she come up to admire him and then say that too me, as if a proud first time mum isnt going to agree with some one when their baby is complemented. What would you do in my position?

To me what she said to you came out of the blue! It didn't really make sense. She said he was cute, you said he was cute. You were trying to put the ribbons away, he was tucked away sleeping...you weren't flaunting anything!

Yeah i thought it was strange too. I really didnt feel as if i was flaunting him! How ever with a brand new baby i don't see the problem if i was to show him off, its what new mums do right??!!! thanks!

cutest baby - Cute baby contest
I guess first off I am wondering why you would be having such a new born child in a crowd of people and putting him on display for ribbons and trophys. but for your question i think she may have come to look to see why your baby was any cuter than the others it was rude of her to speak that way and i would have said the same as you did,its great to be proud of your babybut i dont think I would be displaying him to such crowds with the way the world has so many sicko in it today.

Its hardly a crowd of ppl. all you do is line up and two judges take a look. every one else is too interested in their own child to look at others. but yes i do agree with the point of sickos being around today, it is a scary thought which is why i plan to keep a very close watch during his child hood.

That was very rude of her to go off on you like that! I would have asked her why did she even bother coming up to ask to look at your son. Maybe she was related to one of the other contestants and wanted to see what made your baby so special to win all those prizes. I see jealousy written all over her actions. I've always called my kids cute. What parent isn't going to think that their own child is cute, or beautiful? I don't think you're reading too much into it at all. She was very rude and jealous. It's so sad when people are like that, especially when it concerns an innocent child.
