I think the post of President should be abolished as their power is limited. The Same can be performed by the Chief Justice of Supreme Court. What is your opinion ?

Hi mdvarghese, I understand your stand. The president of India does not enjoy as much power as the Prime Minister. His/Her powers are limited by the constitution. I'm not an expert in the constitution of India. But, from what I do know, I can tell you that the role of President in our country is very important. We saw what happened with the office of profits issue. All the major political parties allowed the bill to be passed in both the houses. It was sent back to the parliament by the president. Imagine, what would have happened if there were no president! The president at such situation has to play the role of a guardian of the constitution. This will keep a check on our politicians (elected representatives). In situations like this, where the Parliament itself is at fault, there needs to be a provision to eliminate any harm to the country. This takes me to the second issue. I believe the chief justice of Supreme Court must be a very busy man. Taking over the role of the president can make it even harder for him. But more importantly, a chief justice is someone who belongs to the Judiciary. We have witnessed legislature vs judiciary kind of circumstances many times during these 60 years. If what you have suggested were to be implemented it would mean many more constitutional deadlocks. The present system does allow the Supreme court to interfere with laws that it considers to be harmful for the country's interests. So, what I am trying to say is that we are better off with a president. I think what needs to be changed is the kind of people who get elected to the highest office. We have had people who brought utter disrepute to the Rashtrapati bhavan. Let us hope that we (or rather our representatives) manage to find those who rightly deserve the title of 'the first citizen of the country'.

I agree with you in some points. What I mean to say is the Selection or Election to Highest Post of India ( President) is politicalsed. It should not be. So the President should not be a politician . If they have an affiliation to any political party, they cannot give justice. Any bills, which sent back by the president without his consent, can be passed in the parliament once again and sent to the President for his consent. Then he has to sign the Bill.If the parliament want to pass a billit is easy for them. Means Parliament is superior than President. If the Parliament want to impeach a President it can impeach with a two third majority. Moreover the Presidents are not constitutional experts. They are taking the advice of the constitutional experts.

i thought you were from where i am, because i want our president to resign.... its a check and balance, if the other is not performing well, somebody in power should do something about it,

Dear sharonercastillo, I am from India. There may be a lot of difference between our constittution and your constitution. May be there will be more power for your President. But in India it is not like that. I never heard about a public agitation for the resignation of the President of india. The reason is very simple. Their actions and speeches never influence the thinking of the people

Thats so stupid.. If the post of president is to be abolished the whole Indian Constitution will have to be re-written.. the president do have power..& Chief justice of Supreme Court too.. its the attitude of Indian Polititians that has to be changed! most of then just want power but not ready to work for it.. They always want to get votes the easy way.. with out doing anything good to people.. Some doesnt even know what to do with the power they got..

Dear What I mean here is this system should abolish. If the post is to be abolished, it is not necessary to rewrite the whole constitution. A part of the constitution to be changed . President is the Supreme Authority and the contradiction is that he doesnt have the Supreme Powers. The Chief Justices are using their powers whenever it is required. Till T.N.Seshan occuppies the post of Chief Election Commissioner, nobody thought of the powers vested on him. But there is no such powers for a President.
