In praise of tagging (This may help new myLotters)

I have come to believe that the lowly, common tag is the most valuable and versatile tool we have here - and few give it a second thought! I am not an expert on myLot or anything like that, but today is the first time I have fully appreciated this little wonder, and I just have to share! First, it's our ONLY organizing tool. Good buddy MsSnow says she tags everything with her username, and one word to let her identify the post. Best idea I've heard so far! Tags can save time another way: if you put down 5 tags the first time you write a discussion or respond to one, you will never be prompted to tag it again, no matter how many times you return to post there! If I understand this correctly, putting 5 tags on your discussion keeps others from changing the tags. Now, the interesting thing is, when I look at the discussions I've 5-tagged without logging in, I see my original tags. When I log in and look at the same discussions in my list, I see tags added by others. I'm still not completely sure about this, it's just my observation, so far. Big hug and thanks to myLot legend and valued friend TeresaK, who helped me learn about this. You can use the tag to give your friends a laugh! If organization isn't your top priority, you can make your tags reflect back on the discussion with humor. You can also do this with photos, once you've passed 500 (like me, yesterday!). A true master of the well-tagged photo is funny, funny friend Alfieklondyke, although some of his tags are definitely Mature Audiences Only. Then there are the infamous tag wars. Anyone who doesn't 5-tag their discussions has left open a potential battlefield! The funniest example of this I have seen was my own discussion on Jerry Falwell's death. I took a controversial position, and both sides participated most enthusiastically! It seemed like there was a new set of tags every time I refreshed the page for about two days, I was rotflmfao... people were SO creative! So, the next time you have a choice between "tag this discussion" and "skip", think about it. You may be missing an opportunity to make someone's day - or your own! (says she as she gleefully adds scurrilous tags to all her friend's stuff!)

Thanks for this insight to tagging. I have only been a mylot member for a week and appreciate the insights and explainations that other mylot members offer to assist us newbies in navigating the wild, wonderful, and at times wacky world of mylot. While I am here I noticed the space where your Avatar would be has a red X...and so does mine. It has been like that for most of the day...and so do my photo gallery slots. Do you or any of your friends have this problem too? My Avatar is an animated flying owl and I wondered if that has anything to do with it...although I have seen others with an animated Avatars so it beats me what is going on and I'd value any comments on your site or mine. Thanks... Perspectives

I have noticed that some avatars are not showing up. I don't know why. I thought it was just me. But guess not.

Some weirdness with the server, I guess. I've noticed a few people having trouble with avatars and photos today. Welcome! Hope you enjoy your membership as much as I do mine!

Good morning Gardengrrl, First, let me congratulate you for reaching your 500th post mile marker. Welcome to the 'greater abilities' club. I love that after 500 posts, we can create our responses in a word editing program, then copy/paste them into the response box. The ability to add pictures is a plus, too. Although I really haven't gotten the hang of that. Each time I've tried, my post gets entered twice. If anyone has any thoughts on that, I'd love to hear them. I feel like such a knucklehead by double-posting. As for the tags: I generally do add some tags. But, didn't know anything about the five-tag rule. So, henceforth I'll make sure not to 'lock-out' other taggers. Do you know why MsSnow tags with her user name? Thanks for the tips & resounding Congrat's on your mile-stone!

Hi, ladyluna! Thanks, I'm still pretty excited over passing 500. So far my fav is pasting links, I'm mildly anal about things like that, so I had an elaborate ritual to make sure the ones I typed by hand were correct. Try adding the photo before you paste in the text, if you haven't already. Maybe that would help. I've been lucky, I haven't had that problem so far. Don't feel badly about a double post, it happens to everyone sooner or later! Thanks for stopping by!

You're welcome. I'm glad to pop in, if for no other reason, than to note your milestone. I kind of missed mine. I was at 517 before I realized it. duh! Oh, and I'll be popping by your "heinous" post tonight. I think I've found something truly hideous for your lawn sale. Until then ...

I had not noticed any one tagging with their username, how does that help other than filling one space, you can always find all your discussions from the index provided. Besides that, I have posted photos with my discussions even though I have not yet made 500 posts, what is the extra advantage of photos that you get beyond 500 posts? I am still learning about mylot therefore all these questions.

I think the point of the way Snow does it is, she does username plus another word to identify that particular discussion, so she won't have to leaf through pages and pages of index to pull up a particular discussion. She can just search that combination of terms, and odds are that the one she wants will be the only result. I think this will be easier to appreciate as your post count rises. It is hard sometimes to find a discussion that's a couple of months old when your list is several hundred pages long. 10 discussions per page, you do the math.... Thanks for stopping by!

what a great way to think of tags- And here I thought they were for driving me crazy- and searching to stop double posting- I'm going to try to put my name in my tags- that way it's easier to find- I didn't know about the 5 tags either- I often wondered why only sometimes it asked me for tags on comments- and not all the time- I'm going to tag this 5 times

I never used to tag until I started getting into the habit and now i hardly enter into any discussion without providing at least 3 tags...don't know why I went from one extreme to another.
