There are many stories about why people decorate Christmas trees. one of these stories says that Martin Luther, a German, started the custom. One Christmas Eve,.Martin Luther was walking home under the stars. He saw a tree and cut it down. He then tood the tree home and decorated it with candles. The candles stood for the stars. Many years later, Germans brought the custom to America. Today, Americans put a star on the top of the Christmas tree. This is the traditional way. Also, they like to decorate the tree in beautiful ways and put presents under the tree.

It was also a Celtic tradition more than 500 years before Martin Luther was born-- An alternative speculation is that as part of the assimilation of the Celts into the Catholic church that this ritual was changed to have a Christian theme to help them embrace their new faith.
