How do we estimate the age of an old tree without lumbering?

You take a core sample; using a special drill, you cut a small circular hole all the way through the trunk, and count the rings on that, then divide by two (since each ring is represented on both sides of the sample). Then you cover the hole with protective paint, to prevent your hole from letting diseases or insects into the tree.
