This is an old wives tale that I have heard for years. I am just curious as to what you believe, thanks for your responses.

It is true they are myths but are long-lasting ones. However, cats are often seen as creatures of the night and may well be seen by some as having liks with the devil. This may well be the genesis of the myths blessed be

Thanks for your response, Ackars. I never said I worried about such things, I neither own a cat nor have an infant. I had just heard someone talking about it.

Always had cats and babies. But must be very careful that cat doesnt decide to cuddle up in the crib. Better make sure the animal cannot get near when the child is sleeping or you are.

There are so many myths surrounding cats and babies. It seems that there is a jealousy issue when a new baby arrives. I supose its just possible that a cat could settle to sleep on a sleeping child. However, I do feel these are myths and not something to be taken seriously blessed be

Thanks for your interesting response ESKARENA1. Like you, I think most myths and legends have some basis in fact and it's possible that at some time in history a cat did suffocate a baby leading to this obvious myth. Cats have always been steeped in mystery. Thanks again.

I have had cats with all 4 of my kids and none ever attempted anything like that. It is an old wives tale. The only thing my cats would do is climb in the crib and play with the babies feet when they moved. We had to put a stop to that because the cat would claw there feet.

I bet it was pretty funny to see the cats playing with their feet (not the clawing part though). Thanks for the response, warriorsdaughter.

Ok I have had both at the same time. It all stems from the fact infants drink milk the cats smell the milk and then lie on the infant hoping to get fed also. Also when a baby is very small the heart can be heard beating a lot louder by the cat this sounds like the cats mother heart beat sohe cat feels comfort from the baby. Once my baby was asleep in her car seat and my cat went up to her just to take a look we took a picture of it as it happened. As my cat touched the babies nose she started to scream, if I hadn't seen exactly what went on I would have worried that the cat hurt her but as I saw everything I know the whiskers of the cat tickled my baby thats what woke her and thats why she screamed. The only thing cats suck off the baby is the milk that's not been cleaned away properly. A cats tounge is very rough which can feel very horrible to a baby. So if you do get a cat and a baby just make sure you keep your baby clean :)

I have heard of babies being suffocated by a cat laying across their face during the night.
