My great aunt found a baby squirrel in her back yard that had been pecked by a bird and my mother brought it home and doctored the huge infected bump on the back of its neck. It recovered and became my pet. We kept it in the house for a while until one night when we were showing it to a visitor and it had a bathroom accident in the visitors lap. That convinced us it was getting too big to be kept in the house. So I kept it in a cage in the garage and would feed it and take it out so it didn't feel too confined. Then it started chewing its way out of the cage and I fixed it but it kept doing it, so I just left the door open. After a few weeks of that it started to leave the garage and day by day the length of time would get longer. Then for a while it would leave in the morning and come back to its cage at night, we would say that it was going to work. Eventually it quit coming back. I would see it in the yard some times and it would recognize me. So I knew it had adjusted to living in the wild by going to its day "job" over the period of weeks that it left in the morning and came back at night.
