my daughter is starting school in the fall, everyone always told me, be prepared for the list that the school sends of a ton of things you will need to buy for her to take to school. i was surprised for her school i only had a list of about 6 things, which was basic like book bag, lunch box, blanket, pillow, shoes and smock. did you have to buy lots for your kids. one of my friends had a list for kindergarden that included coloring pencils and glue etc. her list was like 20 things long.

When my kids were in kindergarden the list was like your friends. It was colored pencils, a pen, glue, glue sticks, thick crayons for the beginning of the year, and thin crayons after Christmas, pencils, folders, blanket, smock. Now that they are older it is even more rediculous. My son is going into 10th grade and we just got a note in the mail saying that all 10th graders are to bring a certain calculator to school that costs between $80 and $120!! I almost passed out reading this! I think it is rediculous what they expect us as parents to provide. What are we paying taxes for. Also, many families can't come up with an extra $80 for a calculator.....I'd better get busy posting so I can buy one:)

wow that is really expensive. they should start collecting slightly used calculators from the graduating kids to resell at a cheaper cost to the 10th graders. that way it would be more cost effective for the students. do you know anyone who has one that graduated this year and doesn't need it anymore.

That is a good idea:) My oldest son graduated last year and he didn't have to have this calculator, but I will check and see if someone who graduated this year had to have it. I am thinking it might be a new thing they are requiring.

I was shocked when my daughter brought home that note too. It's been a few years since then, but you might check with the teacher. They will sometimes have loaner calculators available. If Netwinner had been available to me back then, it would have been easy to earn the money needed to buy one, lol. :)

My son will be starting kindergarten in Sept and they have already sent out a list of school materials we have to buy. Because they order through staples, it was just a matter of us ticking off what he needed or was required of him to bring, and sending in a check. The PTA dealt with the stationary lists. In around late August his supplies plus a school bag we ordered for him will arrive then. All I have to get is his lunch box and drink bottle and a marker of some sort to mark all his belongings.

Hi poppoppop111! The school supplies list comes out at different times for each grade. When my daughter was in elementary school, you could usually find the lists at the grocery stores near the school. Some stores even prepackage the items for easy shopping and just label them with the grade and school so you get the right one. As they progress to the higher grades, the lists don't come out until after school starts. This can be a budget buster if you've gotten used to shopping for the supplies when they're on sale before school starts. The main reason for the delay is because some students change classes after school starts and this can prevent buying unnecessary items. Enjoy the small lists while you can. They definately get bigger and more expensive as they progress. ;) ps. If you shop at Walmart, and aren't in Quebec, I can recommend a free game site that will let you earn gift cards to help pay for the extra school supplies or other expenses. Just let me know if you're interested.

I think what is important is the basic necessity in school. The other stuffs are useless except if it's really important in the near future. Actually, things that are not needed in school can be deferred, so no need to worry about. What is important is the knowledge and learning that your daughter/son has gained in school. Other stuffs in school can be stealed by others but the knowledge cannot. Good day!

Count yourself lucky dear! When my two oldest children were in kindergarden, I was only asked to bring a smock for painting! That was in 1987 and 1989 in NC. When my two youngest were in kindergarden, 1995 and 1996, in Kentucky...I was asked to bring: pencils (1 dozen), crayons (2 24 pks), colored pencils, red pens (2), a package of stickers, a package of construction paper, baggies, kleenex, a bottle of antibacterial soap, a clear bookbag, and a smock. That list changed very little until junior highschool. Each year we were to send EVERYTHING. I also remember in NC that books were provided...and if you damaged the book you had to pay for it. In Kentucky, you rent your books each year...60 dollars or more! (and the books are so defaced that many pages are not readable) It is a big ripoff in this little town!

Many of my son's teachers did not send the list home until the 1st or 2nd day of school, which meant that we had to spend hours looking for things that were out of stock in stores. I wish they would post their lists in stores or on the net of something at least a month before school starts. It is just a courtesy to do so.

I had a list which included book bag, reading materials and uniform. I didn't have smock, pillow, blankets maybe because the school is only 3 hours. Food is provided so there is no need for a lunch box, pencils, crayons, glue, etc.. is provided by the school so we only paid the school for these miscellaneous items on top of the fee.

When my kids started kindergarten, there was a HUGE list of I know at least 20 items which included the normal stuff--book bag and pencils but also other items such as tissues, ziploc baggies in at least 2 sizes, hand sanitizer, white board markers--oh I thought it was riduculous to have to buy that much and to buy items that I felt the school should provide. Plus we also had to pay an activity fee and provide a snack for the class 2-3 times a month through the school year. You eneded up lucky with such a small and normal list.

Our school has about 20 items on the list for grade school. They put together a package that parents buy and everything is waiting for their child on the first day of school. It is all very well organized and the PTA is able to get a better deal on things since they are buy in bulk. They also have a great program/fundraiser in place to supply the packets for families who can not afford them. Parents are, of course, welcome to buy additional things for their child if they want them to have a special notebook or different types of crayons. I worked as a teacher in this school district and I admit it was very nice to know that each child would have at least one of everything to start the year with. Most things we like boxes of Kleenex we would take up and have a class supply that would last the whole year.

I live in Colorado. My son will be going into 3rd grade this year. The school supplies list is always long and very specific. It includes all of the regular stuff, but then it has to be 32 crayons. Not 16 or 64. It has to be a specific size pencil, not the fat ones or mechanical ones. I find that a lot of the stuff on his list he doesn't even use for anything. Last year they had to bring a composition book. He brought it home without a thing but scribbles in it. Then they always have to bring extra stuff like kleenex, hand sanitizer, film for cameras, money to develop the film, money for art supplies. It's crazy and cause me a lot of anxiety because the list is so expensive and specific. It's terrible running to 5 different stores to find the "right" glue.
