From my understanding microsoft are trying to get everyone to migrate to windows vista by stopping the updates for xp... I've got a quad boot os, with windows xp and vista, and to be honest.. I HATE VISTA.. I mean, minimum memory is 1 gig, considering I am an avid pc gamer, I need a high end pc with high memory.. Vista is a joke in my eyes as Aeroglass needs a high end gfx card.. As well as the integrated search, plus if you have an nvidia gfx card, and running vista ultimate, if you play texas holdem, the text on that game is constantly flickering due to the gfx problems. There are many open source operating systems that are available free on the internet and it would be great if programmers realized that many people would actually take advantage of this.. Besides one thing I find with linux operating systems... (NO VIRUSES or adware) BUT getting back to the subject.. I HATE VISTA...

Here's some information on the subject.. Redmond , WA – Microsoft hopes to spur interest in upgrades to its Vista operating system by releasing Service Pack 3 for Windows XP. Vista has received little interest from individuals and consumers, because many don't see a compelling reason to upgrade from the relatively stable Windows XP. Corporations, who cannot afford downtime from bugs normally found in first releases, are especially wary. Most plan to wait until Microsoft releases the first Service Pack for Vista. Microsoft's innovative strategy to counter this reluctance to upgrade will be to release a bug-ridden, security hole-filled Service Pack 3 for XP. "Most people are happy with Windows XP and have no reason to upgrade, but SP3 will fix all that," said Microsoft's VP of Service Packs George Francione. "The bugs and security holes can't be reversed, so there's no going back. The only viable solution will be to upgrade to Vista." Service Pack 3 will be delivered through XP's automatic update procedure and should begin arriving shortly after Vista launches. Many corporations have disabled automatic updates in Windows XP choosing to install updates on their own schedule. However, SP3 bypasses this preference using a software back door installed with Service Pack 2. "Customers will automatically get Service Pack 3 and will get the Vista upgrades shortly after. It's win-win for everyone," said Francione. Customers who find a way to bypass the update to Service Pack 3 will be labeled as violators by the Windows Genuine Advantage program and will face fines and jail time. Many critics of the forced upgrade plan find this punishment extreme, but Microsoft counters that "they obviously haven't seen the Aero interface." SP3 will also remove Solitaire and Minesweeper to ensure it catches the attention of CEOs around the world.

Its a new operating system so its not going to be in use everywhere. If you have extra devices check the manufacturers sites and make sure they have vista drivers. I have been using vista for a while now and like it, I had trouble at first but just because i needed to get use to it. Vista will replace XP and if you are buying a new machine I personally would get vista.

I got a new laptop in the spring that came with Vista so I did not have a choice. It has been a headache, as I had to wait for fixes to be available. Most have been pretty much resolved now. For example, I had trouble getting it to talk to my printer - it wouldn't take the regular installation CD but it printed for awhile without it - then it got temperamental. Then I went and got a newer printer that was certified Vista compatible and that has worked OK - I could now get all functions to work like not just the printing but also scanning into computer, fax capable and so forth. One thing is, I do not like the new 2007 Word. I had a 2007 Word trial, extended it for a 60-day trial, and wound up letting it lapse. I just use the Microsoft Works for everything, and can take a doc and Save As a Word doc (2003 version) which is perfectly OK with me. That way I have a Word version of docs that have to be emailed to anyone who requires that format. You will just have to be extra vigilant to pick software that is Vista compatible and more are being made so every week. I had a Cyber Defender program for a short time and had to get rid of it because I missed the small print that it was not Vista ready. So, it seems inevitable that everyone will be forced to take Vista eventually but you can put it off till fall if you want - and by then I am thinking, most patches etc. will be available for whatever functions and programs you have...Vista does have advantages! It does! And just sign up for tech support for your provider, they are really good guys on my online tech support and I have no trouble getting thru.

Vista is nice on the appearance but not easy to use. Due to the user controls, you will be frustrated in no time for first time usage however after a few weeks, you will get used to it. The best part of Vista is the appearance in Aero version, the graphics produced are very clear and sharp, not even a single freckle can escape. If you used it for internet surfing, you may want to buy Vista Home Basic or Premium. For business usage, of course, Vista Business edition and for ultimate, you must be a Vista Guru.
