2000 corolla CE

I have a 2000 Toyota Corolla CE, it has one of the 3 1.8L engines in it. I don't know specific, but it gets 40mpg highway and 30-33 city with a lead foot. I am looking at the air intake and I want to get some more air into it. The intake is very small and I can feel when im geting up to speed as the engine is winding up I can tell that It would run alot better with more air. The immidet and obvious thing is a high flow air filter, big whop, a high flow filter is no good if high amounts of air can't get in! Any suggestions??
