The create this change, much of the technology had to evolve and the process was not a one-way evolution. The system had to wait for several branches to mature, notably physics and mathematics in the natural sciences and also several areas of engineering and technology. The mathematician gave the principle on which the digital computer works. The physical and semiconductor engineer, after the advent of the transistor gave the new basic toools, which could translate those ideas into practice. The silicon tehcnology had to evolve to certain maturity in order that the roles of several thousand transistors could be compressed into a single chip. It is the integration of the developments in these different fields that made the IT possible, the way it is today, the whole giving rise to qualitatively new features that the parts, individually could never give.
